On the small angle twist sub-grain boundaries in Ti3AlC2
Tilt-dominated grain boundaries have been investigated in depth in the deformation of MAX phases. In stark contrast, another important type of grain boundaries, twist grain boundaries, have long been overlooked. Here, we report on the observation of small angle twist sub-grain boundaries in a typical MAX phase Ti3AlC2 compressed at 1200 °C, which comprise hexagonal screw dislocation networks fo...
متن کاملTwist grain boundaries in three-dimensional lamellar Turing structures.
Steady spatial self-organization of three-dimensional chemical reaction-diffusion systems is discussed with the emphasis put on the possible defects that may alter the Turing patterns. It is shown that one of the stable defects of a three-dimensional lamellar Turing structure is a twist grain boundary embedding a Scherk minimal surface.
متن کاملThe Multiple Roles of Small-Angle Tilt Grain Boundaries in Annihilating Radiation Damage in SiC
Lattice defects generated by radiation damage can diffuse to grain boundaries (GBs) and be annihilated at GBs. However, the precise role of GBs in annihilating the segregated defects remains unclear. Here, we employed multi-scale models to determine how interstitials are annihilated at small-angle tilt GBs (STGBs) in SiC. First of all, we found the pipe diffusion of interstitials in STGBs is sl...
متن کاملSmall-amplitude grain boundaries of arbitrary angle in the Swift-Hohenberg equation
We study grain boundaries in the Swift-Hohenberg equation. Grain boundaries arise as stationary interfaces between roll solutions of different orientations. Our analysis shows that such stationary interfaces exist near onset of instability for arbitrary angle between the roll solutions. This extends prior work in [6] where the analysis was restricted to large angles, that is, weak bending near ...
متن کاملMinimal Surfaces, Screw Dislocations and Twist Grain Boundaries
Large twist-angle grain boundaries in layered structures are often described by Scherk’s first surface whereas small twist-angle grain boundaries are usually described in terms of an array of screw dislocations. We show that there is no essential distinction between these two descriptions and that, in particular, their comparative energetics depends crucially on the core structure of their scre...
